Best Time to Surf Puerto Escondido: A Season-by-Season Guide

Puerto Escondido has one of the most well-defined surf seasons on the planet. Knowing which months line up with your skill level and your goals — barrels, mellow longboard days, or just warm water and good vibes — makes the difference between an unforgettable trip and a frustrating one. Here's the breakdown.

High Season: May to August

This is when Zicatela earns its nickname, the Mexican Pipeline. Powerful south swells push waves to 6-12 feet, with heavy barrels and strong rip currents. It's a high-performance, high-consequence season built for experienced surfers who can read a beach break under real pressure. Early mornings offer the cleanest conditions before the wind picks up.

Shoulder Season: March, April, September, October

Wave size settles into a friendlier 4-8 foot range while the beach break still keeps its punch. This is the sweet spot for intermediate surfers who want real Zicatela power without the full commitment of peak summer swells. Crowds thin out too, so you get more waves per session.

Low Season: December to February

Swell size drops, but this is when Puerto Escondido opens up to beginners and intermediates. La Punta, Carrizalillo, and Playa Bacocho become the move — mellower breaks a short ride from Zicatela, perfect for building fundamentals or just enjoying a relaxed session. November in particular tends to bring consistent, clean, rideable conditions.

A Wave Worth Protecting

Puerto Escondido was recently recognized as a World Surfing Reserve, a designation that protects roughly six miles of coastline — Zicatela and seven other breaks — along with the wetlands and estuaries that support local marine life, including nesting sea turtles. It's part of why we build GoSurfMexico's swimwear line from recycled fabric: the wave we're chasing deserves the same care we put into catching it.

What to Pack, Season by Season

  • High season: a reliable rash guard for long sessions in the sun, and a cap that stays put in the wind
  • Shoulder season: versatile swimwear you can wear from the water to the beach bar after
  • Low season: lighter layers for cooler mornings at La Punta, plus sandals that dry fast between sessions

Whenever you land, Puerto Escondido delivers. Just make sure your gear matches your season — and your skill level matches your swell.
