Mexico Wins Gold: The Melendres Brothers Sweep the Caribbean Games

Mexico's surf team closed out the Central American and Caribbean Games as regional champions, and the headline belongs to two brothers from Puerto Vallarta.

A Family Sweep

Jonathan and Juan Pablo Melendres, both from Puerto Vallarta, each took gold in their respective divisions at Playa Encuentro. Jonathan topped the men's longboard final over Panama's Agustin Cedeno by a score of 13.60 to 12.27 — sweet revenge after a previous loss to the same rival at the Pan American Games. Juan Pablo followed with gold in men's SUP Surf, beating fellow Mexican Giovanni Bercian in an all-Mexico final, 14.60 to 11.06.

Four Medals, First Place Overall

Between the brothers' two golds, Bercian's SUP Surf silver, and Heriberto Torres's longboard bronze, Mexico finished atop the surf medal table with four total medals — ahead of Puerto Rico's four (one gold, two silver, one bronze) and Venezuela's two. It capped five days of competition across longboard, SUP Surf, and shortboard divisions.

Puerto Vallarta's Rising Program

Juan Pablo trains through Puerto Vallarta's high-performance development center, backed by the state sports council — a reminder that Mexico's competitive surf pipeline isn't limited to Oaxaca's famous breaks. Strong regional programs up and down the Pacific coast are producing real international results.
